Last night, Chino and I drove down to New York to go to the opening reception for the BFA Art, Media, & Technology Thesis Exhibition at Parsons (which includes: Illustration, Communication Design, Design and Technology, Photography, and Fine Arts majors.) I specifically went to support my good friends Dan Galdamez and Celia Hazard who both produced books for their thesis projects.
Perhaps one of the most impressive Design and Technology thesis projects was “Origami” designed by Jonah Model which assigned numbers to each piece in the show and allowed visitors to ’save’ pieces by sending that number in a text message to the origami phone number. You would then receive an email with images, descriptions, and a link to the artists website (if they had one.) I loved it—it totally transformed the experience. Instead of taking everyones business cards and writing down their names you could easily have your favorite pieces emailed to you. Also probably saved the school a shit-ton of money on printing programs.
I’ll be posting some of my favorite pieces from the show over the next few days, but in the meantime I strongly encourage you to visit the gallery for yourself! It is on view at the Sheila Johnson Design Center at 2 West 13th Street in Manhattan until May 23rd. The gallery is free and open to the public Monday-Friday Noon-8pm and Saturday & Sunday Noon-6pm. Consider this your invite!
