Daily Guilty Pleasure: Roller Derby

So, if you don’t follow me on twitter, or you’re not my friend in real life, you might not know that I recently started getting into roller derby! It all started when Chino’s old roommate (who is a referee) invited us to our first bout this past summer. It was a double header so we saw the Yankee Brutals and The CT Death Quads jam it out against the opposing teams. I was in love the whole time. Then I saw Whip It! and I was reminded how much I wanted to give derby a shot. About four weeks ago I was in the car with Chino and I finally admitted it out loud—”I think I really want to try out for roller derby.” I found out that try outs were in a week so I borrowed skates from my friend Jay, practiced in the local high school parking lot after work a couple of times, and 3 weeks ago I tried out. And guess what?! I made the cut to stick around for rookie practices! Today I got my first pair of skates and I can’t wait until practice tomorrow to start breaking them in. Ahh! So exciting.

PS: My favorite roller derby name is Em Dash, a jammer from Gotham Girls Roller Derby. Hopefully I’ll make the team and get to pick a name of my own!

Daily Guilty Pleasure: Varsity Jackets

I’ll admit, the picture above from Johnny Cupcakes’ blog inspired this post on varsity jackets. I’m not really talking the high school kind, either. Think varsity jacket mixed with a motorcycle gang jacket. It had completely slipped from my mind that the straight edge varsity jackets ever, at one point, existed. This website is apparently still selling them. I’m not straight edge, and I’m feeling the look so I immediately went to Stewart & Strauss to think about designing my own. Unfortunately those things will break my bank account, but maybe by fall I can make it happen. What do you think, varsity jackets: hot or not?

Daily Guilty Pleasure: Hot Air Press

My very dear and handsome friend Luc Rioual runs a label/press/infernal think tank with some friends of his and they just recently put out their most ambitious project yet. With only a few weeks notice, they put together a limited edition 12″ copy of “The Three Secrets of Fatima,” the most recent EP from Connecticut’s foremost black metal band, Ipsissimus. I don’t know much about the band or have anything to really say about them considering I don’t listen to or like black metal, but I can vouch for Luc and his taste in music. From what he tells me, these records are going pretty quickly, and he’s not just saying that to convince you into buying them, so if that’s your thing, you can head over to their website www.hotairpress.org and pick a copy up. While you’re there, you can also purchase the florida=DEATH one sided 12″ EP entitled “Depression Era Music” which they should hopefully have in their hands very soon and out to the public immediately after.

Hot Air Press is doing some really cool things, and even though it’s taking forever, I will be collaborating with Luc on a zine in the future. Keep a look out on it. All this talk of Spike Jonze’s film adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are is getting me so psyched! This was one of my favorite books as a child. The film is slated to drop the day before my 21st birthday, I couldn’t be more excited. Furthermore, now that I’m studying for a BFA I’ve really began to admire that Sendak wrote and illustrated the book himself.

In all of us is a WILD THING!

So I have my schedule somewhat figured out, and one class I’m taking is a letterpress class at Kallemeyn Press in Brooklyn. Not my teacher, but Earl Kallemeyn, who owns the shop was talking about the history of letterpress and how skilled Japanese pressmen were often tattoo artists—that the history of tattooing is rooted in letterpress. He shared this awesome print the shop did of artwork by Jamie Ruth. After class was over I asked him, and he gave me a print!

Just when I thought the Alex & Chloe craze was over (hadn’t seen someone wear a piece of theirs since the Kate necklace freshman year) I fall in love twice in 24 hours. First, I saw the photo editor at W magazine wearing a bauhaus ring …not sure if it was this style exactly, but that’s besides the point. That ring is dangerous! Then I found this gem:

Someone should tell my future husband to max out his credit cards, buy this, save it for the ~perfect moment~ and then propose. Or tell Chino I’d settle for the Inverted Black Diamond Ring as a Christmas gift, I promise to repay him with Madden 2k10, A Super Bowl XLII DVD, and tattoos. Thanks.

Lauren, yes, that lauren, inspires this installment of DGP. Because I have tried and failed to get my hands on—or in?—Surface to Air’s polished aluminum 2-finger ring, the nameplate version will have to suffice. Take this as Lauren Conrad’s recycling what Carrie Bradshaw did for the nameplate necklace by way of Sex and the City circa ‘99. Mine will say “Proulx” but you can order order yours here.

Yosiell Lorenzo for Project Detonate

No one deserves illustrator stardom more than Yosiell Lorenzo of Project Detonate. He is easily one of the nicest people I’ve met, and one of the most inspiring as well. It was Yosiell that had the hookup for my recent internship at W magazine (that’s a story for another time.) He is a graffiti-inspired illustrator working out of an apartment in New Haven, Connecticut. His paintings are sweet and sour; sweet colors with sour conceptual layers in each piece. If you’re in the area, I urge you to view his Artist In Residence location as part of ArtSpace’s City-Wide Open Studios event, on view for a limited time October 2nd-5th.
