Cameron Browning’s Phlock and David Byrne’s Playing the Building

October 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

It’s that time of year again; the worst time. I’ve written about it before. Parsons registration… the bane of my existence. But to make light of one of the most anxiety-dripping parts of being a Parsons student, let me share with you one high point of this miserable endeavor:

Google stalking prospective teachers.

The best is when you find they are involved in awesome projects or blog about totally inspiring things and you can only hope that this inspiration will translate to them being a great teacher. I’m debating taking a collab course (they’re like a one-time only technology-driven class on a pretty specific topic) with Cameron Browning on the transition of traditional magazines to digital mediums. After lurking him out on the web I found he was the brainchild of this awesome interactive installation called Phlock. Check the video:

The project reminds me of David Byrne’s (of The Talking Heads fame) installation at the Battery Maritime Building where he essentially wired a pipe organ to “play” the pipes, radiators, windows, and metal of the century-old building. Again, check the video:

Gee thanks for the shoutout, Kathryn! The class is going to be really fun, and built around an online fashion publication I co-founded. Let me know if they haven’t sent out the full description yet and I’ll pass it your way…
